Welcome to Kingdom
of Bhutan! Bhutan is a small land-locked Buddhist Kingdom perched in the eastern range of the Great Himalayas. The country, about the size of Switzerland , had remained literally in a time wrap with high snow capped mountains in the north and dense jungles in the south insulating it from the outside world. Bhutan, during its self-imposed isolation, has evolved a unique culture and rich tradition of its own. Mahayana Buddhism (Tibetan Lamaism type) plays a central role in people's lives. Bhutanese wear the traditional dress - Gho for men and Kira for women, which has not changed since 1600s. Bhutanese are big builders in the entire Himalayan region. The castle-like Dzong (fortresses) in every valley built during 17th century to administer the valley in peace and defend during foreign invasion is a fine example of Bhutanese architecture. People's houses are also built with mud, stone and wood, and can go up to 4 storeys. (In USA, University of Texas at El Paso building has been inspired by Bhutanese architecture.) Festivals and special occasions are marked with Buddhist mask dances, singing and day-long archery matches. Environmentally, Bhutan is considered as one of the 10 hotspots in the world. Buddhist respect for life, a national policy of strict forest conservation and sparse population have contributed to the country's impressive forest cover of 72%. In spite of the small size of the country, there is a concentration of more than 200 mammals, 700 species of birds and 5000 plants. (Some even believe Yetis, the legendary snowman, exist in the forests of Bhutan.) So, experience the Kingdom of Bhutan with BHUTAN NORPHEL TOURS & TREKS.
